The B Side

This week on The B Side, a very special collaboration with Poeme Yaaran, host of Kick Tracks!

Poeme and I both share a love for indie and alternative music, which is actually how we connected. When I first started studying at the RRIS and working on my show, I was going through the AudioVersity website and came across Kick Tracks, Poeme’s show.

Poeme had graduated from his communications studies just a few months before I started at the RRIS, and his radio show had run for two seasons. I pressed play on one of the episodes and loved what I heard. It was really similar to what I wanted my own show to be, so I thought I’d reach out and ask if he had any tips for someone just starting out.
Not long after, I messaged Poeme on Instagram, and we instantly bonded over all the musicians we both love, like Interpol, Alvvays, Soccer Mommy, and many more.

A few months later, Poeme was back for graduation, so we found some time to get into the studio together and record this episode right before he returned to Seattle.

We had a ton of fun preparing and recording it, and we hope you enjoy listening just as much. Maybe you’ll even find a couple of new songs to add to your rotation.

This episode follows Lucy Dacus’ career through every era in chronological order, exploring the evolution of her songwriting, sound, and storytelling. From her breakthrough debut No Burden (2016), to Historian (2018), the 2019 EP Home Video (2021), her Grammy winning work with boygenius on the record (2023), and finally her latest album, Forever Is a Feeling (2025), this episode traces the path of an artist who has continually redefined what indie rock and indie folk can be. We’ll also look at the impact of boygenius, whos Grammy-winning album helped bring indie rock and indie folk to an even wider audience, cementing the trio as one of the most influential acts in contemporary music.

Along the way, we’ll hear some of the songs that have come to define Lucy Dacus’ career, from fan favorites to some of my personal picks. Whether she’s writing about growing up, grief, friendship, or love, her music is grounded in top-tier storytelling, making her songs feel deeply personal. This episode looks at how her sound and songwriting have evolved over the years and why she’s become one of the most distinctive voices in indie music.

Hopefully, after listening to this episode, you’ll understand why she’s one of my all-time favorite artists.
